Collagen is the protein found in many structural tissues in the human body, from connective tissue to muscle tissue and important in the healing of various types of wounds.  I see many ads for beauty products as a source of collagen for those of us that are of the age where our skin is losing it’s elasticity and we are starting to look old :(.  Absorbing that protein through the skin is highly unlikely.  The best way is to take it internally and a great source is Gelatin Collagen, I don’t mean eating Jello:).  Gelatin is a pure protein made by the selective hydrolysis of collagen from the skin, tissue & bones of animals, usually cows or pigs.

It is a great source of 20 different amino acids and has several health benefits. Glycine accounts for a third and, according to Web MD, is used for treating schizophrenia and stroke, used to protect kidneys from the harmful side effects of certain drugs used after organ transplants as well as the liver from harmful effects of alcohol. Other uses include cancer prevention and memory enhancement.

It also has a large amount of Proline, or L-proline, which aids in lowering the buildup of arterial deposits and the risk of cardiovascular disease. However, one of the benefits of this amino acid that is best recognized is its effect on the appearance and health of the skin.

For me, the most important benefits of Gelatin Collagen are internal.  My family takes it every other day and has helped with many internal issues.  My mother was having internal pain from an old car accident injury from decades ago; my daughter had irritable bowl syndrome; I was having internal bleeding from an old infection……all three of us had our symptoms go away after starting to take Gelatin Collagen regularly.  Now with my mother and daughter, their symptoms return if they go about a week without taking the Gelatin, my symptoms don’t.

I get my Gelatin Collagen from Great Lakes Gelatin and they have multiple kinds.  The one in the green can has been put through hydrolysis so it is cold liquid soluble.  I add this one to soups and sauces but don’t take it on a regular basis because I think the non-hydrolyzed kind works better.  The beef gelatin comes in a red can and we take a tablespoon every other day, usually with herb tea.  I have also put it in coffee and hot chocolate.  This will only dissolve in hot liquids so never just put a spoonful in your mouth and try to swallow it.  It will gel and get all gummy so you can very easily choke on it. The other kind they have is porcine, which I have not tried.

If you know of any added benefits, please share!
