It is useful to know the IP address of each device on our network but also the one assigned to us by the web hosting provider. Apart from being our “identity” on the internet, the IP address is the first thing we should look for when we want to set up a local network or we have a problem with our connection. What is an IP address and how do I find it?
Networks and the Internet do not recognize our connected devices by the name we give them. Thus, computers, mobile phones, etc., as IDs prefer numbers called IP addresses.
Every device, such as PC, Smart TV, mobile, etc., that connects to our local network, whether at home or in the office, has an IP address. It does not matter if it uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
They all have an IP address when communicating on the Internet or with each other through our router.
IP address (IPv4) is a 32-bit number divided into four groups. Each group contains from one to three digits, with values from 0 to 254. For example, 192.168.0.1 or 184.108.40.206.
Finally, there is IPv6, which is a 128-bit number, with eight sets of four hexadecimal numbers (uppercase and lowercase letters), all separated by a colon. For example: 2001: 0db8: 85a3: 0000: 0000: 8a2e: 0370: 7334.
Internal / External IP address
When it comes to our computers and other network devices, there are actually several IP addresses. Thus, they are divided into external and internal.
External is the IP that any device that connects directly to the Internet has. For example, our router or mobile phone with 3G / 4G / 5G.
This is the IP address assigned to the router by the Internet Service Provider (ISP). The router in turn manages all traffic from our devices that are connected to the network.
The external IP address is unique. This means that, unless we are connected to a proxy or VPN, no other device in the world has the same IP address as ours at the same time.
It is essentially our fingerprint which is found, not only on the PC, but on the tablet and the smartphone, etc.
Internal IP is the IP that a device has on a local network, eg a computer connected to a router / switch.
This way, all nodes in the internal network can communicate. The protocol that the router uses to assign IP addresses is called Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP).
Internal IPs are usually in the format 192.168.X.XXX. No two devices can have the same address on the same LAN, but there are no restrictions on separate LANs.

How do I find my computer’s IP?
The fastest way to find the internal IP in Windows 10 is by right-clicking on the start icon and clicking on Windows PowerShell.
In this case, it does not matter if we choose PowerShell with administrator privileges.
Once the blue PowerShell tab opens, type or paste the following command and press Enter.
As we can see, it reveals more than just the IP address. We will see the total IPv4 address (and IPv6 if supported), the subnet mask, and the Default Gateway or IP address of our router.
In older versions of Windows, we type “cmd” (without quotes) using Windows Search. Then, in the black tab that will open, type ipconfig.
How do I find the IP of the Android device
Finding the IP address is almost the same on all versions of Android with the difference that depending on the manufacturer they may have a different name.
They are usually found in the advanced options or settings of our active wireless network. So, it is enough to click on the name of the wireless network to find the IP address.

So, there are two ways to quickly find the external IP address
Method 1: By command
Right-click on the Windows icon at the bottom left and click on PowerShell.
Once the PowerShell tab opens, copy and paste the following command and press Enter.
As we can see in the picture, we will immediately see the public IP address of the router assigned to us by the ISP.
Method 2: Through a web page
Of course, the fastest way is through the browser we use. Just type “what is my IP?” in the Google search engine.
Otherwise, there are currently dozens of websites like MyIP.gr that display the public IP address with one click. In most cases, without having to do anything else, they show us our external IP directly.
They will all show us the same address, so we choose the one we like best as an appearance, and use that.
Will I always have these IPs?
We must remember that in almost all home connections, external IP is “dynamic”. This means that our router (and therefore our computer) does not always have the same address.
The IP change is usually done every time period specified by the Internet Service Provider (ISP), eg every 72 hours. However, it can change if our connection is lost, if we have closed and reopened the router, or we restart it. At the next connection, we are usually given a new address.
There are Internet connections with so-called “static IP”, but they are more expensive than dynamic connections for exactly the same speeds.
The reason is that a static IP address can be used for business activities, such as running an FTP server, or remote management.
