Make Lettuce Last Longer
I have decided to close my blogspot site and move all my recipe posts over here so this is my first post.
Making Lettuce Last Longer
Lettuce doesn’t last long, it either turns brown or gets slimy within a few days and has to be thrown out. I don’t know about you but my family doesn’t eat a whole head of lettuce that fast. Now, granted, lettuce isn’t very expensive but why waste it if you don’t have to.
A great way to make lettuce last longer is to start by taking the core out of it. Do this by setting it on the counter, core down and with your body weight push down on it. The core will pull right out easily.
Now, wrap it in a paper towel and put into a Ziploc bag getting as much air out as you can. Then seal and put in refrigerator.
I also use a sheet of paper towel for all types of lettuce and put one into bags of lettuce blends and fresh spinach. The above picture is of a head of lettuce that is just over two weeks old….looks pretty fresh!
Doing this for now on!
Good!
Great idea! We eat a lot of salad and yes lettuce doesn’t last too long. I’m definitely going to try this. Thanks for sharing at #AnythingGoes Link up.
It’s such an easy idea. Why don’t they teach us this before we buy lettuce? Thank you for visiting and sharing with #AnythingGoes.
I will have to give that a try! I’m not a fan of iceberg lettuce, but it’s what my husband loves for tacos so we always buy a head for taco night and waste most of it. Maybe this will be the trick that makes it last a couple taco nights
Thanks for sharing your trick!!
I also do this for all lettuces and fresh spinach!
Great tips… and your lettuce looks great!
Thanks!
Fascinating! I typically buy leaf lettuce but this is good to know for when I buy iceberg
I actually do this for all lettuce and fresh spinach!
Another important tip is to avoid metal with lettuce; it will turn it brown. Visiting you today from Shine blog hop. I like the simplicity of this blog.
Thanks for the tip & visiting my blog!
The paper towel is a great trick, we use it all the time.
I wonder if this would work for romaine lettuce too. Thanks for the tip!
Works for any lettuce and fresh spinach!
We generally buy leaves in bags, but when I used to organic ones (and I cannot wait to do it again), I also used paper towels.
It is incredible how something so simple can make such a difference, isn’t it? It keep greens fresh for so much longer.
Thanks for sharing, Mary.

This is a very helpful tip for us all Mary. There is nothing worse than having to throw out what was good food, just because it did not keep fresh.
Thanks,
Kathleen

I do the exact same thing, although I recently bought bagged lettuce — never again. I think it lasted 3 days, even though I squeezed the heck out of it each time I opened it to get the air out. I’ll stick with heads of lettuce. Have a great weekend!
This is exactly what we do and it keeps our lettuce fresh for much longer.
Thanks for sharing on the Shine Blog Hop!
Thanks! These are great tips!
