My dog, Gage, is a three year old mutt I got from the dog pound when he was 12 weeks old. Collies and shepherds are known for having seizures so my little guy has a double whammy since he is a mixture of both.
About a year ago (maybe a little longer) he had his first seizure. I should say, the first I am aware of. He has had four total on three different occasions, that I am aware of. They started out only immobilizing his back legs, now its his entire body. The other night we were awakened to him clawing at the floor in a full blown seizure. Then he had another one about three minutes later. That was a first, having two in a row (that I know of).
I can tell a slight difference in his behavior since those two seizures. He is a little timid and not wanting to hang out on the deck alone (that is where the second seizure occurred). He used to love to just sit out there during the day & evening.
He is very sweet yet tries to dominate our other dog, Griffin, but he knows when push comes to shove Griffin outweighs him by a lot. He burps more than any person I have ever met, talks all the time and is very much a creature of habit, he doesn’t like change. He has to thoroughly smell everything, especially us when we have been gone…..has to know where we have been
I know I have to consider the reality of eventually having him put down. I can’t imagine home without him there. It makes me very sad to even think about putting him down, my daughter will be crushed. I don’t want him to suffer and have poor quality of life but I think I will wait until they start happening more often. Right now they seem to happen about six to eight months apart. He could still have many good years with us. I certainly hope so!
