Natural Lemon Skin Toner
Many years ago I asked my mother why her sister that is 10 years older than her looks like she is 10 years younger than her. Apparently, for decades my aunt had been putting fresh lemon on her face after a shower.
That was proof enough for me that lemon juice is a great toner and I have done it (off and on) ever since. I shower in the mornings before work so I am usually in a hurry and don’t remember to do all the beauty rituals I have (and will be) written about. However, I have been trying to make a better effort
I have been using it as an astringent for years and you can actually feel it working while it is on your skin. It tingles and stings a little bit especially on acne.
Since it doesn’t take much juice I find buying bottled juice turns brown before I can use it all. Not to mention, who knows what all has been added to it which would also be getting applied to your face.
I keep slices of lemon in the refrigerator and pull one out for each shower. If you apply it straight from the fridge, while it is still pretty cold, it will cause your pores to quickly close and won’t be as effective. I grab a slice and bring it into the bathroom so it can warm up while I am in the shower.
Remember: If you have granite or marble counter-tops make sure the lemon is on a plate because the juice will eat through the polish if it touches it.
After washing my face I rub the lemon slice all over, let it stay on for about two minutes then rinse off and moisturize as normal. Now I have never had any kind of an adverse reaction to the acidic juice so I cannot speak to anything like that.
Other benefits to putting lemon juice on your face:
Healing Acne
Lemon juice has natural antibacterial properties that make it a good choice to help cure acne. Using lemon juice on blackheads has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of blackheads. If you leave lemon juice on the acne and blackheads over night, be sure to wash it off in the morning.
Exfoliator
Because of the citric acid, the juice acts as a gentle skin peel that removes the top layer of dead skin cells. This can result in a smoother complexion when used regularly.
Lighten Skin
I found many sites with claims that lemon juice may brighten or lighten skin.
Since lemon juice is an astrigent I think I will use it in my OCM recipe the next time I make a batch….much cheaper than tea tree oil
Please let me know if you have found any other benefits of lemon juice on skin
what an interesting idea! thank you.
If you try it let me know how it works for you….works great for me!
I use toner every night and never thought of doing this. I will have to give it a try. thanks much!

Thanks Karren, Happy Memorial Day weekend to you!
I didn’t know that lemons have antibacterial properties! Great suggestions.
I’ve heard it can fade freckles . . . I think that may be an old wives’ tale, though.
I don’t have freckles on my face so I never actually paid attention to that…lol
Thanks Mary I think I should try that. Great information.
Thanks,
Kathleen

I have GOT to try this! I’m 43 and due to much abuse to my body (alcohol, cigs & sun, oh my) I look considerably older. This is great because there is no risk of bad reaction from some unknown ingredient from a store bought product. And I think $1 to give something a try that may help my skin’s complexion (Notice the age? Still break out some.) is money well spent!! Thanks for sharing!
Kristine, So glad you stopped by to ready my post!
Great tips so glad you shared at #HomeMattersParty
Thanks, glad you enjoyed my post!
I need to try this for sure! Thanks for sharing at Thursday Favorite Things! Hope to see you again this week!
This post has so much great information! I’m going to be watching my granite from now on. Thanks for sharing at Together on Tuesdays
How great! I need to buy some lemons. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for stopping by, April!
Great ideas! It must cost a bit using all those lemons though!
Not at all! You can get a lot of slices out of each lemon and they aren’t that expensive. Cheaper than buying creams with who knows whats in them!
I can’t wait to try this, plus I love lemons. Thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks for stopping by, Jenn!
I love using lemon on my skin! It is magical, I swear! Thank you for posting and talking about this great fruit!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Ashleigh!
That’s amazing! I’ve got some lemons so I’m going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for the tip
And who knows, maybe I’ll get lucky and it’ll take the 10 years off straight away ?
Anna, You MUST let me know if that happens!
Must try this!! Thanks for sharing such great info.
Ok I love this and I’m going to do it. My facial care is pretty low because my skin does not like soap at all, but this is totally achievable!
Randi, keep me posted on how your face does with the lemons. Since it reacts poorly to soap you may want to check out my post on OCM (oil cleansing method)
I put lemons in my water all the time, but have never put one on my face. I will give it a try- lemons are kind of miracle workers.
Thanks for sharing with the Say G’day Party! Pinned from your Pinterest board as could not find a way to do from your blog direct! Look forward to seeing you next week!
I’ve never thought of using lemon as toner. What a great and super inexpensive idea.
I never heard about lemon eating away at the polish on granite before. I used a lemon essential oil granite cleaner…maybe I shouldn’t?
I am sure since it is an oil it is fine but acidic fruit like lemons & tomatoes will eat away the polish.
